Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is synonymous with the cultivar 'Maiku jaku'.

It is a dwarf maple that grows about eight to ten feet tall and wide. Although it is typically reported to be hardy in USDA Zones 5 - 7, we have found it to perform well for us here at  Brookgreen Gardens in USDA Zone 8. It performs well in full sun to part shade.

The cultivar 'Aconitifolium' is known for the following traits. It is a dwarf maple. The foliage is deeply divided and fern-like in appearance. It has very attractive red fall color. The flowers are red, though often inconspicuous and not typically noticed from a distance.
